A MULTI-MILLENNIAL INNOVATION: CONSTRUCTION LIME

Lime and the construction industry have belonged together since time out of mind. After all, the binding property of lime makes for a hardness that will last for millennia. The Egyptian pyramids or the Chinese Wall are only two examples of the use of lime whose application to such projects in form of lime mortar has been going on fro 14,000 years now.

Today, Calcis, with its quicklime and calcium hydroxide products, is an important partner for the manufacturers of lime sandstone, pore stones and dry mortar. Our Calsical® (calcium oxide) and Oxical® (calcium dihydroxide) product families form the basis of our customised qualities whose chemical-physical properties are geared to the end product in accordance with our customers' specs and the processes and facilities used. That is how we provide our customers from the construction industry the dependable qualities that meet all construction standards,  ensure utmost production efficiency and provide economical solutions for all product diversifications.

FOR LOAD-BEARING RESULTS: LIME IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Even the ancient Romans made use of lime's pioneering properties in road and town construction. And on good grounds, literally: For the Via Appia, built in 300BC, the bottom layers were made of lime. Parts of this road are still in their original condition.

In modern civil engineering, Calcis and its Proctocal® products are ideal to stabilise the ground. Moist grounds are compacted and protected against frost. Construction sites can soon be used by vehicles. And since this is a natural product, there is no upstream health hazard. Additional modifications widen the range of products by dust-reduced qualities, which are safe when used in built-up areas.

In wearing courses,  the Oxical® and Fillcal® beneficiated qualities are used that increase wear resistance and as frost protection agents provably raise asphalt's capacity.

THE ALL-ROUNDER: LIME IN INDUSTRY

Our products, developed for customers of various industrial backgrounds, are as varied as are lime's applications in industry.

Calcis products are used in the chemical industry, e.g. for the production of calcium carbide, propylene oxide, sodium carbonate and glycerine. Lactates and lactate acids are the basic substances used in cosmetic products, pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs, in which they are used as salt carriers and for flavouring purposes. Citric acid is also produced with Calcis products and used in the food industry. In paper and glass production, our products regulate the pH value, as they do in aluminium smelters and PM fineries.

What reagents are used, how fast the raw material is to react, what properties are needed: Whatever the issue, our product development department will see to it that your specs are met in full.

A CLEAN SOLUTION: LIME IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Chemistry and nature can go hand in hand. Very much so, since the production of synthetic products always means an application of the laws of nature to natural resources. Every product is only a re-interpretation of the substances that have been around for eons.

In order to balance their impact as well, we all have a responsibility to see the environment protected. In technical terms, this is about reversing the chemical changes production has caused. And just as lime is needed for the production of many a material, it is also required for reversing such processes.

Exhaust gases in the air, production effluents, sludge and raw water to be treated and turned into drinking water are neutralised with Calcis products. Pathogens and odours are eliminated and heavy metals absorbed. Calcium oxide and calcium dihydrate reagents are used that are geared to the special conditions obtaining at our municipal and industrial customers' sites.

OUR DAILY BREAD: LIME IN AGRICULTURE

An efficient farming and animal husbandry is not only economically desired by farmers’ organisations. Agrarian productivity is of a huge global importance. This very minute, 150 more people are being born than die. This time tomorrow, there will be about 220,000 more people on this Earth, and they all have a right to a life-long healthy diet.

Lime increases agriculture and fish-farming's efficiency on an ecological basis and in animal feeds is an important mineral. We supply Raiffeisen cooperatives and food producers with fired and unfired lime qualities, dry or earth-moist, and with a variable share of magnesium, in accordance with our customers'  requirements.

And our Carbocal® products ensure an ideal pH value, a large buffer capacity and a perfect mineral substance in the production of high-quality substrates, peats and earths.

SIMPLY INDISPENSABLE: LIME IN THE IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY

The production of steel, the global No. I material, requires the No. I raw material. Only lime will ensure that in a blast furnace undesired incidental substances are slag-captured. The production of pig iron also requires our calcium oxide in order to separate the mineral dirt in the ore and the residual coke from the iron components. In the refining process  from pig iron to various steel qualities, our Ferocal® products are used to absorb silicic acid, phosphorus and sulphates and sulphur.

Our application engineers take account of the entire production process chain, including customers' plant-specific requests, and provide customised products of an exactly defined reactivity and grain size distribution. Our sales department shows the same competence in the support processes and provides solutions for FGC and effluent and sludge treatment.

CALCIUM OXIDE – OUR CIVILISATION'S FIRST RAW MATERIAL

Quicklime, calcium oxide, caustic lime, unslaked lime - the many names for this fascinating raw material reveal how very versatile it is. And it is this versatility that makes it unique. Without lime we would have nothing: No roof because there is no mortar, for example. And we would still have dirt tracks instead of roads, but no glass or paper, and since without lime there would be no iron, we could only use our hands for tools.

Many thousand years ago, humans discovered lime’s advantages. Lime can only be produced when limestone is being burnt. The natural CO2 contained in the stone is emitted into the air and what remains is fired lime - the mother of all raw materials, as it were.

Calcis produces a wide range of calcium oxide products for numerous industrial applications. The different fields of application require different customised formulations, which we come up with by applying our know-how, state-of-the-art production processes and economically efficient logistical concepts. We thus help our customers to make the world a bit safer, healthier, easier to handle, cleaner and more exciting, mobile, colourful and comfortable.

SLAKED LIME – SO VERY VERSATILE

Calcium hydroxide, also known as calcium(di)hydroxide, slaked lime or hydrated lime, is the result of a beneficiation process in which quicklime is hydrated. This process, slaking, changes lime's properties to such an extent that it virtually produces a raw material in its own right - with new capacities and new fields of application.

Our calcium hydroxides are, for example, used in FGC to reduce air pollution. The hydrate captures the undesired sulphur exhausts and forms calcium sulphate - plaster, in plain English. And this is of such a high quality that it is soon available in a DIY store as drywall.

And our Oxical® calcium hydroxides are also used in the production of cosmetics, medical drugs, foodstuffs and paper or in the construction industry, always geared to the respective requirements. The reactivity capabilities of this astonishing raw material are as effective as they are inconspicuous. Capturing the greenhouse gas CO2 during the drying process, for example, makes calcium hydroxide in mortars and renders an ecologically relevant factor.

LIMESTONE – A NATURAL RAW MATERIAL FOR THE REGION

Calcis quarries the assay grain – calcium carbonate CaCO3 – in its own deposits in the Teutoburg Forest. The biogenic sedimentary rock derives from micro-organisms' sediments that millions of years ago formed the bottom of the sea. Tectonic shifts pushed this material to the surface, where it is accessible to humans, who use it as a raw material.

Our deposits are characterised by highly potent shares of CaCO3, which as an important mineral in animal feeds, for example, makes for healthy diet. And as a natural fertiliser or as an added mineral in potting soils etc. Calcis limestone is also a coveted raw material, which we customise through an individual grain size distribution, a variable share of magnesium, and in a dry or earth-moist form.
